June’s Long Days

The month of June was busy. Between summer starting, and golf season kicking up, it was hard to check on the bees. I would take my walks to watch the hives. To smell the floral fragrance coming off the boxes, to watch the girls going back and forth with pollen pockets, and to give them water for the hot days. The last Sunday of the month though… My walk ended in a moment I have been waiting for as a new beekeeper… A SWARM!

I was walking Cuddles (picture below) and checking the bee boxes. As I walked towards the newer boxes close to the edge of our property, I heard this loud buzzing. I looked up, and there it was! A small, football sized ball of bees. I immediately took Cuddles inside, suited up, and started to gather supplies. I had a couple of 8-frame bee boxes and I grabbed one and placed it under the swarm. I cut the branch they were attached to and they fell just outside of the box. They were not going inside which told me the Queen must be in the small grouping of bees outside of the box. I helped the group of bees inside and the stragglers slowly made their way inside. I closed up the box, waited a bit, then moved them to their new landing zone. So far, they are doing well as there was some movement on the front porch of the hive the next day!
